TOCQUEVILLE, ALEXIS DE. De la Démocratie en Amérique. Paris: Charles Gosselin 1835-1840. 4 vols., 8vo, 207 x 130mm. (8 3/16 x 5 1/8in.), contemporary French green quarter calf gilt over marbled paper boards, by Le Brun, signed with his gilt stamp "Le Brun Relieur" at the foot of spine on vols. 1 and 4, text of vols. 1 and 2 browned, some foxing throughout, lacks a blank leaf at end of vols. 1 and 4. FIRST EDITION, half-titles, hand-colored folding lithographed map bound at end of vol. 2. Howes T278 and 279; Sabin 96060 and 96061. This most perceptive inquiry into the nature and institutions of American society made by a foreign observer was written and published in two parts. The first, comprising volumes 1 and 2, was published in Paris in 1835. Its popularity was immediate as two further Paris edition appeared in the same year and another in Brussels. The second part, vols. 3 and 4, appeared in 1840. The first edition is rare and the present copy is notable for its uniform contemporary signed French binding. (4)
