Less than 5,000 miles from new and formerly of the Sam Sheer and Richard Paine Collections 1911 OLDSMOBILE LIMITED MODEL 27 SEVEN PASSENGER TOURING Chassis No. 75017 Engine No. 64010 Maroon with black fenders and black belting with gold pinstriping and dark red tufted leather interior with a tan canvas top Engine: water cooled, in-line, T-head, six cylinder, cast in pairs, 707ci., 60hp, 5 x 6 inch bore and stroke; Gearbox: four-speed manual with reverse; Suspension: front, semi-elliptic leaf springs with rear three quarter elliptic leaf springs and front, and rear Hartford shock absorbers; Brakes: internal expanding rear wheel hand brake with external contracting on rear wheels. Right hand drive. The Oldsmobile Limited stands as one of the most glorious achievements of the Olds Motor Works Company. The initial T-head engine utilized six cylinders cast in pairs with a square bore and stroke. The wheelbase on the 1910 Limiteds was 130 inches, the pressed steel chassis sat atop four massive 42 x 4½ inch wheels and the overall appearance of the Limited was quite impressive and unforgettable. This colossal car was indeed capable of cruising speeds easily over 70mph and in truly grand comfort as well. The Limited model name was derived from a factory catalogue about the production of its new car. While the output for 1910 has been increased, such a car cannot be produced rapidly, therfore a limited quantity can be built . This said, literature indicates that only a small number, reportedly 325, of the Limited Model 23s were produced in 1910. For 1911 even fewer were produced, as factory records indicate a total production of just 250, and today only a handful are still in existence. In all, there are three 1911 Oldsmobile Limited Model 27 motor cars registered with the Horseless Carriage Club of America and beyond those examples only a few others are known to exist, most of which are residing in private collections where they will undoubtedly remain as cherished highlights. The 1911 Limited Model 27 cars were further improved by the factory, the wheelbase was lengthened to 138 inches, bore and stroke had been increased from the square figure of 4¾ inches to 5x6 inches, and a new, massive 707 cubic inch engine replaced the 505 cubic inch version of 1910. The factory catalogue boasted, In the Limited we offer a car which leaves nothing to be desired in design, construction, finish, power or equipment. It stands in the front rank of high grade cars; the greatest of a line universally recognized and ranked among leaders . Needless to say, Olds executives were quite pleased with themselves as few cars were nearly as recognizable and admired in the short years of Limited production. The Limiteds were also romanticized in art as well in one of the most famous automotive paintings of the time, Setting the Pace , by William Harnden Foster Largely admired for his work as a New York Central Railroad illustrator, Foster painted the piece pictured here illustrating a Limited racing the New York Central locomotive at the request of Olds executives. The artwork was reproduced extensively and was used as a marketing tool to announce one of the Limited's adages, the very spirit of Power and Speed . This imposing example was added to the Browning Collection in 0000 after spending many years in both the prestigious Richard Paine and Sam Sheer Collections. While in the Browning Collection, the Limited has enjoyed virtual anonymity as it had rarely been shown or displayed at any of the Horseless Carriage events nationwide. It appears to have been subject to a much older cosmetic restoration as much of the paintwork on the hood and body of the car indicates a patina of age and use. In areas older red paint is present below the current maroon color, perhaps indicating the car's last or even original color. Nevertheless, this stunning example seems to have aged quite well since its decades old cosmetic restoration. This chassis number 75017 indicates th
