BRANTEGHEM, Willem von. Pomarium mysticum tum novorum tum veterum fructuum... Effigies insuper aliquot Divorum ac Divarum . Antwerp: Willem Vosterman, 1535. Two parts in one, 8 o (170 x 113 mm). Titles within woodcut borders, 92 large woodcut illustrations, mostly full-page, woodcut initials and tailpieces. (Some pale spotting and soiling.) Late 18th-/early 19th-century half calf, marbled boards (a bit rubbed). Provenance : Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792, inkstamp and signature on title [cropped]); I.L. Philips (signature dated 1804 on pastedown); Charles Butler and Warren Wood Hatfield (bookplate). FIRST EDITION IN LATIN of Branteghem's fine emblem book from the library of Sir Joshua Reynolds Vosterman published both the Dutch and Latin editions in 1535. Some of the woodcuts are copied after Albrecht Dürer Hans Springinklee and others. RARE: only the Bute copy is recorded at auction in the last 30 years by American Book Prices Current (15 March 1995, lot 270) and RLG locates one copy each of the Dutch and Latin editions, both at Harvard.
