GOLD BINDING]. 18 carat gold binding, possibly for an almanac, French, ca 1780.
GOLD BINDING]. 18 carat gold binding, possibly for an almanac, French, ca 1780. 53 x 44 mm. Both covers with enamel blue border surrounding convex panels covered in glass, below which on each cover is a gold panel with fleur-de-lys designs in each corner, the front cover has an oval inset with the delicately cut out and engraved monogram "AL" surrounded by the inscription "Souvenir d'Amitie," against a green fabric background. The back cover shows a charming oval painting on enamel of a young lady arranging flowers in a vase. On the inside front cover at center is a cut out and engraved monogram "LL", the surrounding gold panel contains engraved fleur-de-lys designs at each corner; on the inside back cover is an oval enamel painting showing Amor with a torch and flower wreath, with doves holding a floral wreath in their beaks, the surrounding gold panel decorated as the inner front cover. Hinged and held together with hollow gold pin or pencil. Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 13 March 1957. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE GOLDSMITH'S ART APPLIED TO A BINDING. Bindings of this kind were made in 18th-century France to contain almanacs, which would be replaced each successive year.
