HEBREW.] DURAN, Shimon ben Zemach (1361-1444). Teshuvot (Tashbatz) , in Hebrew. Amsterdam: Nephtali Hertz Levi, 1738-39.
HEBREW.] DURAN, Shimon ben Zemach (1361-1444). Teshuvot (Tashbatz) , in Hebrew. Amsterdam: Nephtali Hertz Levi, 1738-39. Six parts in one, 2 o (317 x 196 mm). Hebrew type. Two allegorical woodcut title borders and four other typographic borders. (First title frayed along fore edge, last two leaves loose and frayed, some occasional pale soiling.) Contemporary Dutch vellum with brown mottling over pasteboard, gilt-panelled on covers, a central panel on each side stained pink, on the front with a gilt stamp of Moses with the tables of the law, on the back a gilt stamp of Abraham and Isaac at the sacrifice, smooth spine gilt and with Hebrew title in blind. Provenance : D. Heckelmacher (signature with Hebrew inscription on pastedown); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 5 January 1965. Other copies are found similarly bound in stained vellum, and with pink stained central panels. The gold tools representing Old Testament scenes at center, however, are very scarce. According to the Jewish Encyclopedia , "The entire issue of a book is usually in the same binding, but occasionally it is issued in two different kinds of binding, as in the case of Simon Duran's Responsa , Amsterdam, 1738" (111:214). Steinschneider 2609; Zedner 704.
