BIBLIA LATINA: Biblia cum concordantiis . [Strassburg: Johann Prss,] 1489. Chancery 2° (287 x 200mm). Collation: a-c 8 d-i 6 . 8 ii 6 k-l 6 m 8 n 6 ñ 6 o-p 6 q 8 r 6 8 s-y 6 . 8 z 8 6 8 8 A-D 6 E 8 F-H 6 I 8 K-L 6 M 8 N-O 6 P 8 Q-R 6 S 8 T-X 6 y 8 Z 6 Aa-Cc 6 Dd 8 Ee-Kk 6 Ii 6 a 6 b-c 8 (a1r title, a1v register, a2r prologue of Jerome and Bible text, Kk5v explicit dated 1489, KK6r Translatores biblie , Ii Epistolae et Evangelia, a1r Interpretationes Hebraicorum nominum , c8v blank). 450 leaves. 52 lines, double columns, the Interpretationes in 4 columns. Type: 4:300G, 7:156G, 8:80G, 10:65G, printed guide-letters. 2-9-line initials in red. (Tear in F3 into text without loss, some light browning and spotting, small marginal wormtracks in first and final leaves.) Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards (missing clasps, small tear at head of spine, rubbed), the stamps are Schwenke-Sammlung Blattwerk 311 and Ranke 155, ascribed to Strassburg. Provenance : contemporary ownership inscription on final blank verso crossed out, and some early marginal annotations; Johannes Sichardus (1499-1552), inscription erased from front pastedown but clearly legible with U.V. light; Eustachius Lorber of Bamberg, 1558, inscription erased. This is one of a group of Fontibus ex Graecis editions, named after the Latin distichs found in some editions. They claim to be newly corrected and include additional material discussing earlier translations and methods of interpreting Scripture, and they include the table on the Epistolae and Evangelia. This material was then incorporated into other editions as part of the Plenus apparatus . This unsigned edition was considered by Masch to be the last of the genuine Fontibus ex Graecis editions; the later ones he characterised as being either derived or spurious (Darlow & Moule p.913). This copy was formerly owned by the German humanist and Lutheran reformer, Johann Sichard. A law professor at Freiburg, Sichard was also one of the elite group of scholars, including Erasmus, employed by the Basel printers to edit texts for publication. The volume then passed to the Lorbeer family when Sichard's widow married Justus Lorbeer, adviser to the Bishop of Bamberg. HC 3104; GW 4265; BMC I, 122 (IB. 1658); Goff B-588; Pellechet 2326; IDL 852; BSB B-462
