ATTRIBUTED TO THE BALTIMORE PAINTER, CIRCA 330-320 B.C.
AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER ATTRIBUTED TO THE BALTIMORE PAINTER, CIRCA 330-320 B.C. The body of the obverse in two registers, the upper with an assembly of the gods, Athena seated to the left, wearing a peplos and an aegis, a crested Corinthian helmet in her right hand, a spear in her left, leaning on a shield, nimbate Apollo to the right, seated on his chlamys, holding his kithara in his left hand, a laurel branch in his right, Hermes to the right leaning against a tree, nude but for high boots, a chlamys under his left arm, holding his money bag and a kerykeion, a bird in the tree, his sister Artemis to the right, wearing boots, a chiton with a bandolier over a long-sleeved garment, and a red chlamys, holding a spear in her left hand, a hound beside her, the lower register with a youth seated on a folding stool, nude but for a chlamys and boots, holding a sheathed sword and a knobbed staff, his corslet and greaves above, with three companions, two to the right, each nude but for a chlamys, one with his foot resting on a shield, offering a Phrygian helmet and a spear, and one holding a pilos helmet and a spear, a shield below, and one standing to the left, his chlamys pinned over his shoulders, his petasos hanging, holding a spear and a shield; the neck with a female head in three-quarter view amidst florals, a band of lozenge and a thin band of bead-and-reel above; the body of the reverse with a flowering plant in a naiskos surrounded by four draped female offering bearers; the neck with palmettes, a band of laurel and a band of dots above; a band of meander with dotted squares encircling below, tongues and ovolo on the shoulders, ovolo on the rim, with wave encircling below, palmette complexes below the handles, the volutes with molded female heads, white on the obverse, reserved on the reverse, the shoulders with duck heads framing the handles, details in added white, red, and yellow, the foot separately-made, with a profile female head amidst florals, a palmette on the reverse 36¼ in. (92 cm.) high
