ATTRIBUTED TO THE WHITE SACCOS PAINTER, CIRCA 330-310 B.C.
AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER ATTRIBUTED TO THE WHITE SACCOS PAINTER, CIRCA 330-310 B.C. The obverse with a nude warrior in added white within an Ionic naiskos, seated on his cloak, facing right with his head turned back, a crested Corinthian helmet in his raised left hand, a spear held in his bent right arm, greaves hanging above, his corslet below, a sheathed sword before him, the podium with a band of key, surrounded by four female offering bearers, each facing in, to the left, one seated with a fan and a ball of wool, two phialai before her, and one seated with a phiale and an oinochoe, to the right, one seated with a mirror and an alabastron, and one standing with an alabastron and a bunch of grapes; the reverse with a three-tiered flowering plant within an Ionic naiskos, the podium with scrolling, surrounded by four female offering bearers, each facing in, to the left, one seated with a mirror and a bunch of grapes, a ball of wool and an alabastron before her, and one standing with a phiale, a ball of wool and an alabastron before her, to the right, one seated with an alabastron and a mirror, and one standing with a patera and a wreath, a band of meander encircling below, the shoulders with tongues; the neck of the obverse with a head of an Amazon in three-quarter view emerging from a blossom amidst elaborate scrolling, dentils above; the neck of the reverse with a female head in profile to the left in between palmettes and scrolling tendrils, a wreath centered by a rosette above, wave on the underside of the rim, ovolo on the rim, palmette complexes below the handles, molded duck heads on the shoulders on the reverse, the volutes with molded heads of Io in added white, with yellow hair on the obverse, black hair on the reverse, the volutes with white scrolling on the obverse; the separately-made foot with a profile female head on one side, a palmette on the other, scrolling tendrils in between; details in added white, yellow and red 34¼ in.
