AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER ATTRIBUTED TO THE VIRGINIA EXHIBITION PAINTER, CIRCA 330-300 B.C. The obverse with a draped female and a nude youth in added white embracing within an Ionic naiskos, the female with two vertical red stripes along the length of her peplos, her hair bound in a kekryphalos, a ball of wool in her lowered right hand, the youth with a wreath in his lowered left, a floral sprig below, the podium with a band of key, to the left a standing draped female with an open box in her raised left hand, a situla in her lowered right, a tympanum before her, to the right a nude youth moving to the right and looking back, a situla in his lowered right hand, a thyrsos held over his shoulder, a patera in the field, a band of tongues on the shoulders, the neck with a female bust emerging from a blossom amidst elaborate scrolling, a band of laurel centered by a rosette, a band of bead-and-reel, and a band of wave above, ovolo on the rim; the reverse with two draped youths on either side of a filleted stele topped with a kylix, the podium with a wavy line; a band of stopt meander encircling below, a band of tongues on the shoulders, a large palmette framed by tendrils on the neck, a band of laurel centered by a rosette, a band of bead-and-reel and a band of wave above, ovolo on the rim, palmettes below the handles, molded duck heads on the shoulders framing the handles, the volutes with molded gorgon heads in added white on both sides, framed by scrolling on the obverse; details in added white, yellow and red 39¾ in.
