Unsur al-Ma'ali Kay Kaus: Qabus Nameh Qajar Persia, 19th century a renowned book of moral precepts and rules of conduct in 44 chapters compiled in AH 475/1082 AD by Kay Kaus, the Prince of Tabaristan, Persian manuscript on ivory paper, 173ff. plus two flyleaves, each with 12ll. of flowing black nasta'liq , occasional words and phrases in red, gold margin between black rules, blue outer rule, ruled outer margin, (negligible staining, pages slightly trimmed, a few loose from binding), opening folio illuminated in gold and polychrome with gold clouds between the lines of text, illuminated heading on f.170v., seven miniatures throughout the text painted in polychrome gouache and heightened with gold depicting various aspects of Qajar life, particularly at court, black lacquer binding with concentric cusped diamond-shaped gold medallions filled with meandering flowering vine, gold vine borders (few chips to edges, spine slightly scuffed), the red lacquer doublures painted with a flag iris within gold vine borders folio 6¾ x 4¼in. (17.2 x 10.7cm.) text 4¾ x 2½in. (12.1 x 6.4cm.)
