Gouache, 12.5 x 7.25 in. (sight), framed to 19.5 x 14.25 in. Signed lower right. Depicts a group of Federal soldiers working to erect a large wooden stake while armed men keep watch in both the foreground and background. A painter, printmaker, and illustrator from New York, William Henry Shelton (1840-1932) also served his state during the Civil War as an artilleryman. Shelton enlisted as a private on October 31, 1861 and was promoted several times over the course of his service with the New York 1st Light Artillery, attaining the rank of first lieutenant by the war's end. The majority of his postwar oeuvre is based on his experiences as a soldier, including his capture at the Battle of the Wilderness. Shelton was confined as a prisoner of war in Columbia, SC and, after a failed escape attempt, successfully returned to his regiment in the fall of 1864. He detailed his capture and subsequent escape in a series of etchings produced for Century during the 1870s and contributed additional artwork to both Harper's and Leslie's. Condition: Not removed from frame for inspection.
