In May of 1880, a large number of Sioux Indian chiefs, representing most of the tribes of that nation, visited both Washington, DC and the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. During their trip to Washington, the chiefs expected to make an agreement granting the right of way across their reservation to the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, as well as the Chicago & Northwestern Railway companies, for a line from the terminus of these roads on the Missouri River to the Black Hills. At Carlisle, they would pay a visit to the Sioux Indian children that attended the school. (Information obtained from American-Tribes.com, October 10, 2019.) Provenance:American Indian Photography Collection of John W. Painter (1929-2008) Condition: Even toning to print. Few spots/possible ink lines on print. Some staining, spotting on mount, which also shows some edgewear and corner loss.
