Albumen photograph, 16.5 x 19.5 in., on 17.75 x 19.75 in. mount., recording the Shoshone / Bannock delegation in Washington, DC from April to mid-May 1880, taken by Charles M. Bell. Pictured back row from left to right is Tyhee, John A. Wright (Indian Agent), and Charles Rainey (Interpreter); front row from left to right is Jack Tendoy (Uriewici), Captain Jim, Tendoy, Jack Pete, Jack Gibson, and Tisidmit. The Shoshone Delegation was brought to Washington, DC to discuss with members of the federal government the secession of Indian lands. The government had attempted earlier to relocate the Shoshone, Bannock, and Lemhi to the Crow Reservation in Montana. This failed and much hostility between settlers and the Indians continued. Ultimately, the government forced the groups to move to the Fort Hall area in Idaho. Provenance:American Indian Photography Collection of John W. Painter (1929-2008) Condition: Some water damage around edges, some small tears along margins, old tape around margins.
