SIR HENRY MORTON STANLEY (1841-1904) A collection of 9 photographs of Stanley, his family and places of importance in his early life, [circa 1890-1922]. Provenance : Miss Eva Mabel Tenison (1880-1961, inscriptions on verso of photographs). [ Comprising :] i) John Rowlands (later Henry Stanley), half-length, seated in formal clothes, aged 15, taken a few months after leaving the workhouse in St. Asaph. Gelatin silver copy print (of an earlier print). 6½ x 4¾in. (16.25 x 11.8cm.). ii) Henry Stanley, full-length, in formal clothes, aged about 18. Gelatin silver copy print (of an earlier print). 6½ x 4¾in. (16.25 x 11.8cm.) (torn with loss). iii) ELLIOT & FRY (photographers). Henry Stanley Bula Matari (The-Smasher-Of-Rocks), half-length, aged 44, in his exploration clothing. Gelatin silver print, with photographers blindstamp. 6¼ x 4¼inches (15.6 x 10.6cm.). iv) GUIGONI & BOSSI (photographers). Dorothy Stanley 1841-1904), bust-length, studio portrait, inscribed and dated 'August 1890'. Gelatin silver print. 5¼ x 3¾in (13 x 9cm.). Mounted on card. v) Dorothy Stanley bust-length, studio portrait. Gelatin silver print. 6½ x 4¾in. (16.25 x 11.8cm.). vi) G.C.BERESFORD (photographers). Denzil M.Stanley (b.1895, Stanley's adopted son), half-length, studio portrait in Hussars uniform. Platinum print. 6 x 4inches (15 x 10cm.). Mounted on card. vii) The cottage were Stanley was born. An interesting group of photographs of Stanley and his early life collected by Miss Tenison, a close friend of Dorothy Stanley Included with the lot is a typed genealogical table showing the descent of Dorothy Stanley from Oliver Cromwell.
