Frontispiece, title vignette by Dorothy Stanley printed in sepia, 22 plates and numerous text illustrations (lacking the map and letter facsimile from the pocket). Nelson, Mr A. Mounteney Jephson, Lieut. W.G. Stairs, R.E. and Surg. Thos Heazle Parke, A.M.S. (Emin Refief Expedition) by Van der Veyde. PRESENTATION COPY of the first American edition. On return from his last commission to Africa to head the expedition for the relief of Emin Pasha, Stanley was a celebrity. He withdrew to write his report and no one was reportedly admitted to see him. Pond was an exception, and Stanley welcomed him in London and invited him to make a proposal for a new lecture tour in the face of stiff competition from other others. The Emin Pasha expedition formed the basis of his first lecture in New York, which was a huge success with gross receipts of $17,800. (7)
