Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) and the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition The lecture tour of the United States 1890-91: Taber Photographers, San Francisco. A group of 4 mounted photographs of Stanley and his party [his wife, mother, Arthur Mounteney-Jephson and three servants] at Monterey, California, March 19th 1891 (see Bierman p.342); together with a negative for one of the images of the train The Henry M Stanley ; a photograph of Sioux Warriors taken at Pine Ridge, Illinois, by George Spencer photographer, Chicago, Illinois, verso inscribed 'Mrs. Henry M Stanley/with compliments of/Colonel R.E.A. Crofton/15th Infatry USA/Fort Sheridan Illinois/March 25th 1891.' Two blue silk banners painted in brown paint (470 x 1150mm. and 200 x 650mm.) with the slogans "Idaho Gem of the Mountains" and "Sends Greetings to the Heroic Stanley", together with the menu and seating plan for the "Farewell Dinner to Henry M. Stanley" at the close of his Lecture Tour in America, given by J.B. Pond at the Lotus Club, New York. Saturday Evening April 11 1891; and a framed certificate appointing Stanley as an honourary member of the Geographical Society of California dated San Francisco, 7th December 1892. A few mementoes of Stanley's very successful lecturing tour to America in 1890-91. Arranged by Major Pond, Stanley took up where he had broken off in 1886 to go on the Emin Pasha Expedition. Pond arranged for the party to be transported around the States in a special railway carriage complete with kitchen, bathroom, 3 bedrooms and drawing room with piano. The tour netted $12,000 in New York alone and overall Stanley earned himself $60,000. (11)
