RYFF, WALTHER HERMANN. Reformierte Deutsche Apoteck, Darinnen Eigentliche Contrafactur der Fürnembsten und Gebrëuchlishten Kreütter. Strassburg: Josias Rihel 1573. Folio, 339 x 215mm. (13 3/8 x 8 1/2 in.), contemporary calf over bevelled wooden boads, covers blind-panelled and -tooled with outer border of repeated leaf tools, inner panel with floral tools at angles and central oval cartouche with an arabesque design on an azuré ground, two brass fore-edge clasps, edges stained blue, remains of three paper index tabs; head of spine chipped, extremities rubbed, a few small scratches to covers, title stained and with short marginal tear, occasional browning, mostly to edges, occasional slight showthrough of red coloring . 3 parts in one (collation as in Hunt), Gothic type, title printed in red and black, 166 LARGE WOODCUTS, MOSTLY OF PLANTS, FINELY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, eight-line and smaller woodcut fraktur initials. The only edition, published after Ryff's death: "the publisher...must have gathered this material together from Ryff's notes and previous publications and produced the book on his own" (Hunt).
