(11 11/16 x 8 3/8in.), eighteenth-century half vellum, morocco gilt lettering-piece on smooth spine, edges sprinkled red, worn, upper joint splitting, traces of old scotch tape repair, two small patches to g5, one covering a few letters, a few leaves browned, quire I foxed, stain to Aa6v partially obscuring a few letters, some dampstaining, occasional marginal soiling . 367 leaves (of 368, lacking final blank), with signatures. 420G (first two lines of title); 18:180G (title and headings); 88G (text, resembling De Gregoriis 32:85G, cf. BMC V, p. 369, Benalius 13:85GA). Double column. 53 lines and headlines, marginal letters keyed to indices. Title within Tacuino's floriated woodcut border, on verso a full-page woodcut of a group of six physicians within white-on-black woodcut border, full-page cut of skeleton on verso of "Tractatus de Animalibus" divisional title (A1v), full-page cut on verso of "De Urinis..." divisional title (aa1v), a consultation scene with four doctors, a child and two attendants, within white-on-black woodcut border, and 1062 small text woodcuts (including repeats). Spaces for initials with guide letters. Fifth edition, first Italian edition, with the pseudo-Galenic "De facile acquisibilibus" (book 2 of De remediis facile parabilibus ). Tacuino's woodcut title border, which incorporates dolphins' heads in its floral design, was used in several different works and was "one of the most influential pieces of ornamentation of the sixteenth-century" (Mortimer). The small woodcuts are reverse copies of those of Prüss's Strassburg editions; the skeleton was also copied from these editions. The two other full-page woodcuts are based on cuts from earlier Venetian books (the second cut being derived from an illustration from the Venice 1493 edition of Ketham's Fasciculae medicina ).
