(10 1/16 x 7 3/8 in.), contemporary or sixteenth-century binding, parchment from an antiphonal over paper boards, worn, soiled and wormed, joints splitting exposing leather cords, lacking 12 leaves, fol. t1 defective, seven leaves with tears or repairs affecting text or woodcuts, worming to first 50 leaves, some marginal repairs, headlines of 12 leaves cropped, early marginalia cropped, dampstaining, browning and soiling throughout . Collation : a-z8 A-C8 1-2 8. 212 leaves (of 224, lacking a1-8, q6, 1/1, 2/2, and 2/8, 2/1 misbound before 1/2), with signatures. Types: 3:180 (headings, numeration in a roman type of the same height); 5:93 (text). Double column (indices in 3 columns). 43 lines and headlines. 374 (of 384) woodcuts: cut of physician with woman (at left) on C6r, 372 (of 382) woodcuts principally of plants, some with chapter numbers cut on the block, THE WOODCUTS COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, numerous woodcut white-on-black capitals in square frame, approx. 31 x 31mm. (BMC I), colored in brown; spaces for initials, supplied in red. Fifth edition. The only Furter edition, closely reprinted from Grüninger's 1485/86 edition (Goff G-99), and containing the same woodcuts. RARE.
