Gart der Gesundheit. [Strassburg]: Reinhard Beck 1521. Chancery folio, 283 x 198mm. (11 1/8 x 7 13/16in.), contemporary half blind roll-tooled pigskin over reverse-bevelled wooden boards, "Herbari[us] Teusch" stamped above panel of decorative roll-tools on upper cover, spine in five blind-tooled compartments, the uppermost with a later ms. lettering-piece, another with remains of a nineteenth-century shelf label, two brass clasps (the binding tools not identified in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung ); lower compartment of spine splitting, old parchment reinforcing band around lower cover, fraying to edges of first and last few leaves, repaired tear to title grawing woodcut border, a6 with repaired tear affecting a few letters, supplied in careful ink facsimile, a few short marginal tears, last two quires loosening slightly, woodcut on t3y partially faded from streaky bleaching, full-page cut of skeleton stained, a few other minor stains, dampstaining, browning. Collation : a-z6 A-D6 E-F8 G6. 184 leaves, with foliation and signatures (conjugate leaf G3.4 bound in reverse order). Type 96G. Double column. 46 lines. Title with first line printed in elaborately flourished woodcut capitals and two woodcuts of plants. Two full-page woodcuts of a pharmacist holding a jar with an attendant heating a liquid at an open fire (E5v, not listed by Hunt), and of a man in bed attended by three physicians (F1v), two smaller woodcuts, of the Annunciation (E6v) and of woman with doctor holding urine flask (E7r), approximately 400 text woodcuts of plants, animals, minerals and genre scenes; five-line metalcut criblé initials. Second edition printed by Beck, illustrated with the same small woodcuts as his 1515 edition. Most of the cuts are crude copies of the woodcuts originally used by Johann Grüninger in his edition of the Gart and later used by Beck's predecessor Johann Prüss for his edition of the Hortus Sanitatis . The woodcuts of the skeleton and of the sick man and physicians were first used in Hieronymus Brunschwig's Chirurgia (Strassburg: Grüninger, 1497). THE ONLY COMPLETE COPY KNOWN, according to the Hunt catalogue; used to supply photostat facsimiles of the seven leaves lacking in the Hunt copy. A highly imperfect copy, lacking some 64 leaves, was sold at Reiss & Auvermann in 1983. Hunt I, 21; Nissen BBI 2285; Ahumada 14. Provenance : A few contemporary marginalia in Latin and German, a recipe written in a contemporary German hand on lower flyleaf; Ulrich Kayser, physician, cancelled ownership inscription (before 1725); unsigned statement of purchase of the book on July 26 1725, both on front pastedown; with E.
