PIERRE PUVIS DE CHAVANNES, STUDY OF ORPHEUS WITH ITS LYRE, BLACK CHALK ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER
This study of Orpheus with his lyre is related to one of the murals paintings in the Public Library in Boston (1881-1896), one of the most important wall decorations by Puvis de Chavannes. Painted in Paris, the paintings were sent to the United States by boat. The eight panels still adorn the walls of the main staircase and represent Philosophy, History, Chemistry, Physics, Pastoral poetry, Dramatic poetry and Lyrical poetry. The present drawing is preparatory for the latter, with some differences in the position of the figure.
We are grateful to Bertrand Puvis de Chavannes for his help in writing this note.
