NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to Major General [William Anne] Villettes, Victory off Toulon, 7 October 1803, 2 pages, 4to , integral blank, docketed by recipient (offsetting of text onto integral blank, light soiling at folds), tipped into an album, green morocco. 'A JUMBLE ABOUT THE TRANSPORTS': Nelson writes to ask for assistance with small boats, 'in the little time I was at Malta I fear I made a Jumble about the transports', having ordered two for Villettes' own use, not knowing that Malta was in need of transports: 'all my wish was and in which I am sure you heartily coincide to put our Country to no more expence than is necessary'. The letter closes with expressions of Nelson's 'warmest attachment'. William Anne Villettes, of Huguenot extraction, had gained Nelson's respect during their service together at Bastia in 1794; at the time of this letter he was the military commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, based in Malta.
