NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1756-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to [Elizabeth, Lady Collier], Merton, 24 October 1801, one page, 4to ; with a separate autograph address leaf to Lady Collier. The promotion of a young officer: 'If your son has served his time I hope if he is still in the Foudroyant that he is promoted as many will be made by the Capture of the French ships at Alexandria, If he has not served he stands no chance'; Nelson expresses his powerlessness in this case, and 'Lord St Vincent or Sir Tho[ma]s Troubridge ... will tell you that I cannot get a Lieut. made.
