Printed in Black letter, title within an elaborate woodcut border composed of a genealogical tree and numerous portraits of the Kings and Queens of England (McKerrow and Ferguson 75), woodcut initials (Title laid down with loss to margins affecting woodcut border, C3, dd4, ggg3, H2 torn affecting text, a few sholder notes and running titles trimmed, some dampstaining, mostly marginal and heaviest at beginning and end.) Late 19th- or early 20th-century morocco ruled in black and gilt, with central gilt monogram and coronet of the Marquess of Lothian stamped on each cover, gilt edges by Orrock, Edinburgh. Provenance : "HA" (monogram ink stamp surmounted by crown on A1) -- Marquess of Lothian (monogram on covers) -- Newbattle Abbey Library (bookplate) -- A. Edward Newton (bookplate), sold in part II of his sale Parke-Bernet, New York, 15 May 1941, lot 209. Fourth issue of an important SHAKESPEARE SOURCE BOOK prohibited in 1555 by an Act of Parliament and not reprinted until 1809. This is one of the Chronicles of English History Shakespeare used for the source of his English plays, particularly Richard III and for the account of the battle of Castillon in Henry VI .
