Beschreibung:

GERSON, Johannes (1363-1429). De pollutione nocturna. An impediat celebrantem vel non . [Cologne: Ulrich Zel, ca 1467]. Chancery half-sheet 4 o (194 x 131mm). Collation : [1-2 8 ] (-1/1 blank, 1/2r text). 15 leaves (of 16, without first blank). A single paper stock (shared with lot 387). Gothic type 1:96 (99), rounded h throughout. 27 lines. Rubricated. Modern calf; quarter-morocco box. Provenance : purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 1982. Second edition of this brief treatise by the mystical theologian and chancellor of Paris University, on whether or not nocturnal emissions should interfere with saying Mass. Zel had also been responsible for the first edition about a year earlier. More than a dozen other incunable editions of this practical text testify to a real demand. It is also of some medical interest (Klebs 459.2; Stillwell Science 388). One of the two Bibliothèque Nationale copies of this edition has the rubricator's date 1468. Zel published in the same year a related text by Gerson, De cognitione castitatis et pollutionibus diurnis (Klebs 460.1); the two works survive in some copies bound together, but they need not be considered a single edition. Unwashed and unpressed copy. H 7697; GW 10809; VK 477; Pellechet 5219; not in BSB; BMC I, 180; Goff G-255.
