Translated and edited by Johann Fayser the younger. Augsburg: Michael Manger for Elie Willers, 1599. 2 o (318 x 209 mm). Title in red and black with woodcut border incorporating classical equestrian scenes, elaborate woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces, 88 full-page woodcut illustrations and diagrams in text, some repeated, one double-page woodcut plate of the parts of the horse at end (small reinforcement on verso of fold of double-page woodcut, some minor spotting, small hole to front free endpaper.) Early vellum binding, a bifolium of a 15th century manuscript prayerbook (ties lacking); black quarter morocco folding case. Provenance : Johann Rudolph (ownership inscription dated 1599 on title). Grisoni's work was first published in Italian in 1550, and had been translated into French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and English by the end of the century. The first German edition was published in 1570, the second in 1573, this appears to be the third edition. The 88 full-page woodcuts show the anatomy, accoutrements, and schooling of the horse, including 20 tournament scenes. This copy contains the double-page plate with a diagram of blood-letting for horses. Graesse III:160.
