EINSTEIN, Albert. Original Silver Print Photograph, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY EINSTEIN. Herman Mishkin NY, 1921. 12 x10in . Matted and framed.
EINSTEIN, Albert. Original Silver Print Photograph, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY EINSTEIN. Herman Mishkin NY, 1921. 12 x10in . Matted and framed. Taken by NY photographer Herman Mishkin during Einstein’s first trip to America, this is an especially sensitive and artistic depiction of the great scientist. The remarkable German inscription on this photograph reads in translation: “A memento given in friendship to an ardent awakener of the Jewish Soul / and a successful campaigner for our university.” One of the primary reasons Einstein came to America in 1921 was to raise money for the recently founded Hebrew University in Jerusalem, of which he was one of the founding Board of Governors (together with Sigmund Freud, Martin Buber, and Chaim Weizmann). Together with Chaim Weizmann (the later first President of Israel), Einstein toured the US and attended multiple fund-raising dinners and venues. The historical record of Einstein’s time in the US is not fully detailed —and Einstein’s own correspondence from this period is relatively sparse -- and we are unable to precise who was the recipient of this inscribed photograph. Signed Einstein photographs of such early date are Very Rare; as too are inscribed photographs (of any date) chronicling Einstein’s Zionism.
