Venice: Aldus Manutius and his father-in-law Andreas Asulanus, 1523. Aldine 8° (155 x 96 mm). Italic type. Aldine device on title and last leaf. 19th-century green morocco, gilt Aldine device on sides, spine gilt in six compartments gilt lettered in two, gilt and gauffered edges (some minor rubbing to joints and edges). Provenance : Charles Jacob Stuart (bookplate, “Baronettus Carolus Jacobus Stuart”); Arthur W. Machen (1827-1915, acquired “at Bartlett in Boston,” presumably N. J. Bartlett and Company). Valerius Flaccus's treatment of one of the oldest Greek sagas, that of the Argonauts who, led by Jason, set out to recover the Golden Fleece. Almost nothing is known of Valerius Flaccus, but it is presumed he died in about 92-93 A.D. before completing the eighth book. Adams V-77; Ahmanson-Murphy 192; Renouard Alde 97:3.
