VERGILIUS, Polydorus (c.1470-1555). Von den erfyndern der dyngen... Augsburg: Heinrich Stayner, 1537. 2 o (295 x 197 mm). Woodcut illustration on title, 134 woodcut illustrations in text by Hans Weiditz H. Burgkmair und H. Schäufelein. (b4 with short marginal tear affecting text, some light darkening, tiny wormhole N1-m6, some minor worming at end.) Late 19th-century calf (rebacked, some scuffing). FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN of "De inventoribus rerum.” Polydore Vergil was born at Urbino and went to England and was naturalized there in 1510. He became Archdeacon of Wells and wrote a history of England. Vergil's book on the "Inventors of Things" is compiled from classical mythology and early histories. It covers natural history and technology with detailed descriptions of the invention of printing and paper, the origin of the Olympic Games, architecture and theater. The woodcut illustrations depict: printers, alchemists, lawyers, marchants, musicians etc. Adams V-440; BMC/STC German 889; Fairfax Murray 425 (second edition).
