GRANT TO THOMAS, "THE "ROCK OF CHICKAMAUGA," WITH ORDERS FOR THE ASSAULT ON LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN AND MISSIONARY RIDGE A superb letter in which Grant outlines his strategy for the capture of Confederate strongholds on Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain, an attack successfully carried out six days later. In the wake of the Confederate victory at Chickamauga (where Thomas earned the nickname "The Rock of Chickamauga") Union forces under Rosecrans withdrew into Chattanooga and were besieged by Braxton Bragg. Grant was placed in command of the Military Division of the Mississippi, broke the siege and made preparations to drive the Confederates from their strong positions on the high ridges around Chattanooga. In this letter, he instructs Thomas that "All preparations should be made for attacking the enemy's position on Missionary Ridge, by Saturday morning, at daylight...However the general plan...is for Sherman, with the force brought with him, strengthened by a division from your command, to affect a crossing of the Tennessee River just below the Mouth of Chickamauga...and to carry the heights...before the enemy can concentrate a force against him. You will co-operate with Sherman. The troops in Chattanooga Valley should be well concentrated...This Division should show itself, as threatening as possible, on the most practicable line for making an attack up the valley. Your effort then will be to form a junction with Sherman, making your advance well towards the North and of Missionary Ridge, and moving as near simultaneously with him as possible....All the troops will be provided with two days cooked rations in their haversack and 100 rounds of ammunition on the person of each Infantry Soldier. On 24 November, Grant's carefully planned assault began with the so-called "Battle Above the Clouds" on Lookout Mountain; the following day it culminated in the Battle of Missionary Ridge, a resounding Union victory and a severe blow to the Confederate cause.
