A BANKRUPT FORMER PRESIDENT SCRAMBLES TO RAISE CASH. Grant orders a desperate fire sale of his St. Louis property, six days after learning he is bankrupt. "If offer of sixty-five thousand is for my farm and Mrs. Grant of [646] acres you may close." Less than a week before, on 4 May, Ferdinand Ward came to Grant, asking for a one-day loan of $150,000 to cover demands made against the Marine National Bank. The Bank was one of the entities connected with the Grant & Ward brokerage house. Grant got the money from William H. Vanderbilt, who wrote a personal check for Grant on the spot, no questions asked. On 6 May Grant learns that Ward bilked investors out of tens of thousands, the Marine National was bankrupt, so was Grant & Ward and so was Grant. Mortified, he immediately tried to repay Vanderbilt, deeding him all of his real property and all the valuable gifts presented to the Grants on their world tour. Formerly content with Adam Badeau's authorized biography, Grant started to write articles for Century Magazine , then, at the urging of Mark Twain, devoted the final year of his life to composing the Personal Memoirs --a winning investment.
