Autograph note signed ("U.S. Grant") as President, with an autograph endorsement signed by Admiral David Dixon Porter n.p., 14 September 1874, one page, 8vo, comprising 10 lines plus signature and date, on verso of a letter to President Grant from a 14-year-old boy requesting an appointment as a Cadet Midshipman at the Naval Academy. Grant's note reads: "Referred to the Sec. of the Navy. Let special attention be called to this application when appointments to the Naval Academy for the class of '76 come to be made...." -- ANDREW JOHNSON. Autograph note signed ("Andrew Johnson President U.S."), Executive Office, 9 August 1865, one page, comprising 5 lines plus signature and heading, on verso of a letter to President Johnson from S. Foot, requesting a midshipman's appointment for a Vermont youth, responding: "Respectfully referred to the Hon. Secretary of the Navy with the hope that the within request will be granted...." (2)
