GRANT, Ulysses S. Autograph document signed ("U. S. Grant") to "Hon. Thos. Speed, and other Tennessee Republicans, Galena, Illinois, 23 June 1880. 2½ pages, 4to, original autograph, stamped envelope . THE "MEANS USED...MAY NOT BEAR SCRUTINY": GRANT LOSES THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION FOR A THIRD TERM. Rutherford B. Hayes kept his promise not to seek a second term, and Grant, who had already served two full terms, was again the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination. But the Convention was divided. After 33 ballots, Grant's base began to erode. Garfield continued to support John A. Sherman, but on the 36th ballot Sherman and Blaine threw their support to him, for a final tally of 399 votes for Garfield, over Grant's 306. Here, Grant is philosophical (and perhaps a bit relieved) about his loss. "Your kind letter...was duly received. I have received many such since the meeting of the Chicago Convention. I can assure you that I prize these manifestations of confidence and respect more highly than I should a nomination grudgingly given, or one obtained by any doubtful means. I assure you that I was much relieved by the action of the convention, and while the means used to accomplish the result attained may not bear scrutiny, the nominee [Garfield] is an able, experienced statesman and a thorough republican. If elected I do not doubt but that he will give as good an administration as any one who could have been selected. With assurances of high regard...for my friends who supported me to the last ballot, and the constituancy represented by them."
