Strassburg: Matthias Schurer, 1510. Small 4 o (196 x 139 mm). Title and 6 section titles with woodcut illustrations. First five gatherings rubricated in red. (Margin of title repaired, some light worming, mostly marginal.) Contemporary blind-stamped pink-stained half pigskin and wooden boards, one brass clasp (tip of catch missing). Provenance : acquired from Gilhofer & Ranschberg, 1983. FIRST EDITION of these seven moral tracts adapted by Geiler von Kaisersberg from sermons by Johannes Gerson, containing ONE OF THE EARLIEST PRINTED VERSIONS OF CINDERELLA AND ONE OF THE EARLIEST ILLUSTRATIONS of the popular fairy tale, Der Eschen Gründel or "Aschenbrödel." The other tracts include Der hellisch Löw; Die Christenlich Künigin; Der dreieckkechte Spiegel; Das Klappermaul; and Der Trostspiegel. Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg was a popular preacher of the 15th century and is considered to be one of the fore-fathers of the reformation on account of his demands for moral reform.
