Together 2 pages, 4to, Chartwell and Hyde Park Gate Stationery, punch hole at top left corner of 6 April letter ; with secretarial letter dated 7 May 1947. "THIS IS A VERY FINE WATCH AND I VALUE IT VERY MUCH" Churchill thanks the famous Swiss watchmakers for mending a treasured family watch--gratis! "I now send you my Breguet watch," Churchill writes on 6 April, "which was given to me fifty years ago by the late Duke of Marlborough and had been his father's before him. This is a very fine watch and I value it very much." In the last two years, however, it periodically stopped. "On one occasion the main spring was broken and had to be replaced." He sent it to Messrs. Dent of Pall Mall, "and they kept it for several months each time, and yet, after I had used it for a few weeks, it again stopped suddenly. I feel therefore that it should have a thorough overhaul at your hands..." The operation was a success, for Churchill writes six months later "to thank you for the excellent work you did on my Breguet watch earlier this summer." He had wanted to send along some signed books in thanks, but "It now appears however that there will be a further delay before they are ready. The watch is going very well, and I am obliged to you for the trouble you took with it. Pray accept my thanks also for your courtesy in declining all payment." Together 3 items . (2)
