CHURCHILL, Winston S. Two autograph letters signed ('Winston S.C.' and 'Winston') to [his cousin] Ivor [Guest, later 1st Viscount Wimborne], 'At Sea. Near Alexandria' and S.S. Victoria on the Nile, 23 November and 14 December 1902, 5 pages, 8vo , bifolia.
BRODRICK'S ARMY, UNANSWERED QUESTIONS AND A DUBIOUS ADDRESS IN PARIS: Churchill writes in November with a list of questions [not present] he wishes to have answered, instructing his cousin to 'Unload them gently upon the W[ar] Office', asking the questions on a single subject on different days in order to detect 'discrepancy & lying'. In the second letter he is rather put out to see that Guest does not in fact propose to ask any of the questions, but this is banished in his delight at seeing that his bête noire St John Brodrick, the secretary for war, has 'been compelled to withdraw his proposals about the Yeomanry. It is satisfactory to have drawn first blood'. The letter concludes with an intriguing invitation to Guest to join him in Paris, where he will stop on the way home, and where he is keen to pursue a curious-sounding assignation: 'I cannot remember the address of Sunny's friend, & I shall feel inclined to pay her a visit, so will you write without fail a discreet letter ... with the necessary information' ['Sunny' is their cousin the 9th Duke of Marlborough, the nickname drawn from his secondary title as Earl of Sunderland].
