CHURCHILL, Winston S. Photograph signed and inscribed ("Winston S. Churchill for Elbert A. Wickes, March 1932"). Black and white photograph, 7½ x 9½in., matted and framed.
CHURCHILL, Winston S. Photograph signed and inscribed ("Winston S. Churchill for Elbert A. Wickes, March 1932"). Black and white photograph, 7½ x 9½in., matted and framed. A SCARRED LION, Churchill stands with four of his Boston hosts on his 1932 lecture tour of America. Wickes, his agent, stands just to Churchill's left and rear. Originally scheduled to commence in Brooklyn in December 1931, Churchill's tour was interrupted when a taxi struck him on Fifth Avenue, putting him in hospital for several weeks. The scars on his forehead are still plainly visible. Churchill's nerves were as damaged as his body in this mishap, and he needed several weeks in the Florida sun to recuperate and shake off the depression that downed his spirits. All the while his American lecture agents were eager to get him up before their audiences. Churchill grimly soldiered on through the tour and fulfilled all his obligations.
