CHAMBER OF CHILLS No. 22 * 2nd Issue Publisher: Harvey [Indicia: Witches Tales, Inc.] Date Published: August, 1951 Description: Apparent VG (4.0). Spine stress, tiny corner chips, several small tape repairs, V-shaped tear to back cover at spine with GLUE REPAIR. Cream to light tan pages. Cover: Al Avison. Art: Vic Donahue, George Appel?, Rudy Palais, John Giunta. GPAnalysis: A 4.0 (Universal) sold for $200 in 12/22. "I've noted that the first issue of CoC is numbered #21 for completely unknown reasons. I would really like to hear from anyone who can cast light on this mystery. As with Witches Tales, the early Harvey horror comics aren't particularly interesting." — George Suarez, Tales Too Terrible To Tell #8. NEC: 1993, p. 28. No big mystery here, George. The reason for Chamber of Chills launching with ish #21 is the usual story in these cases: the numbering was carried over from a previous title. In this case, Harvey's Blondie comic book ended with the 20th issue, and rather than pay the Post Office a new deposit as was required for new titles, the company changed the title to Chamber of Chills with #21 and hoped the postal inspectors wouldn't notice. George Suarez is right about the soggy contents of this mag. Even a panel featuring an alligator chomping off a guy's head fails to inspire much horror. The artist responsible, possibly George Appel, seems never to have seen a real gator before, or even a decent photograph of one. His rendition calls to mind those improvised medieval paintings of exotic beasts that clueless artists based entirely on hearsay and imagination. Enjoying the Sale?
