CUENTOS DE BRUJAS No. 31 * Mexican CHAMBER OF CHILLS No. 16 Publisher: La Prensa Date Published: April 1954 Description: CGC certified: Fine (6.0). Cream to off-white pages. Mexican version of Chamber of Chills #16 (Harvey, 1953). Color interiors. Stories translated into Spanish. Cover: Lee Elias. Art: Al Eadeh, Howard Nostrand, Mo Marcus, Rudy Palais. CGC Census: 2 graded copies, of which this is the highest. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in any grade. PBA sold a 6.0 for $271.25 in 3/23. While brands like Coca-Cola and Chevrolet helped spread an image of American abundance to foreign markets, our comic book exports carried a different view of American life altogether. As seen in the pre-Code crime and horror comics that proliferated abroad, America was a garish, amoral place of grotesques, flophouses, grifters and tarts. "The contents of commercial comics eventually triggered a series of diplomatic problems for the United States.... American comics became synonymous with cruelty, violence, and greed. They were a threat to local cultures and young minds.... The comic book, in short, was a domestic and international embarrassment." — Paul S. Hirsch, Pulp Empire: The Secret History of Comic Book Imperialism. University of Chicago Press: 2021, p. 9. A limited edition of ten hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a few dozen softcovers. Fun reference, great keepsake, fully illustrated, chockablock with obscure facts, gags, bon mots. Softcovers are $40, deluxe hardcovers with dust jackets and limitation plates are $200. These books always go fast so don't delay. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com. Consignments welcome for PBA's Fall 2023 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Find out why PBA is the new fan-fave of funnybook fiends. "This is some of the best commentary I've yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books... Priceless." — R. Crumb. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
