CHAMBER OF CHILLS No. 9 Publisher: Harvey [Indicia: Witches Tales, Inc.] Date Published: June, 1952 Description: VG (4.0). Spine stress, 1" split at top spine, small nick at bottom spine, 1/4" edge tear, mild vertical crease, top right corner of front cover creased, sun shadow to top edge and spine area of back cover. Off-white pages. Cover: Al Avison. Art: Vic Donahue, Bob Powell (1 page), Tom Hickey, Rudy Palais (1 page), Al Avison, Manny Stallman. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 3.5 sold for $255 in 9/22; a 4.5 sold for $309 in 11/21. Aside from a grisly vignette of severed heads on pikes that accompanies the text feature, there's not much of note in this ish, except for some endearingly goofy Al Avison and Manny Stallman art. Pre-Code savant George Suarez calls this mag a bit of a letdown after the previous two issues, both of which are packed to the rafters with excessive violence and weirdness (including a man who turns into a giant crab and eats his wife's corpse). "This level of horror could not be maintained, however, the next four issues are not remarkable for being particularly gruesome or particularly interesting." — Tales Too Terrible To Tell #8. NEC: 1993, p. 29. Enjoying the Sale? Order a fully-illustrated softcover catalogue for 30 bucks. Only about 100 copies were printed and they're going fast.
