Engraved title-page, folding map and three plates after José Ramos by Bartolomé Vázquez (Some pale marginal dampstaining.) Contemporary Spanish mottled sheep gilt (some light rubbing to joints and corners). A TALL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST GENERAL HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION OF THE EASTERN PROVINCES OF VENEZUELA AND OF THE GUYANAS. Caulin was a Spanish Dominican missionary who had lived in the colonies for many years during their period of greatest colonial development. His account describes the geography, natural history, discovery and conquest, and missionary activities of Spaniards in Venezuela. His manuscript was written in 1759 and later updated by Caulin to cover events up to the date of publication. The very detailed map of New Andalucia is dated 1778 and was engraved by Louis de Surville by order of José de Galvez, then minister of the Indies of Spain.
