Herbst, 1773 (ink signature on verso of title). FIRST EDITION. Baegert was a Jesuit missionary in Lower California from 1751 until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768. In this account he seeks to disprove the prevailing myth of California as land of plenty, emphasizing instead the merciless heat, dangerous animals, hostile terrain, and untrustworthiness of its inhabitants. The book is nonetheless filled with valuable ethnographical and historical information. Chapter 20 is devoted to the Waicuri language. The map shows the location of the many Jesuit missions in Baja California and the route taken by the author in his journeys to and from the region. It is derived from Consag's important 1746 delineation of the peninsula. The two plates are not included in all copies.
