BELTRAMI, Giacomo Constantino (1779-1855). A Pilgrimage in Europe and America, Leading to the Discovery of the Sources of the Mississippi and Bloody River; With a Description of the Whole Course of the Former, and of the Ohio . London: Hunt and Clarke, 1828. 2 volumes, 8 o (227 x 143 mm). Errata leaf. Frontispiece portrait, folding map of the Mississippi River (repaired with tape), 3 plates and 2 folding plans. (Corner of p.88 torn away affecting a few letters, some occasional foxing.) ORIGINAL MUSLIN-BACKED BOARDS, UNCUT, printed paper spine labels (some light wear, light rubbing to labels). Provenance : Henry Dorsey Tamandis? (signature on second title). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Beltrami, a member of the Long Expedition, travelled up the Mississippi, the Red River and to what is now Minnesota. His writing is vivid. "He had much to say of the aborigines, and expatiates upon the natural history and scenery of the region he visited with intellegence and enthusiasm" (Tuckerman, America and Her Commentators , p.342). After suffering at the hands of Major Long, Beltrami, a political refugee from Italy, struck out on his own, discovering Lake Julia, which he claimed as the source of the Mississippi River. The first edition, published in French in 1824, was severely criticized and the preface to this edition responds to the attacks and adds two letters, one describing western Pennsylvania and the other his ocean voyage. Buck 181; Howes B-338; Monaghan, pp.10-11; Rusk, The Literature of the Middle Western Frontier , p.89; Sabin 4605; Tuckerman, America and Her Commentators , p.342. SCARCE IN BOARDS. (2)
