Text in both volumes in double-column. 20th-century red morocco gilt. Provenance : Mr. Foss (presentation inscription in the prayer book from Rev. Yate); Chichester Literary Society and Mechanics' Institute (inkstamp on flyleaf beneath Yate's inscription). FIRST EDITIONS OF THE FIRST MAORI PRAYER BOOK AND THIS EXPANDED VERSION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT IN MAORI. The works were issued both separately, as here, or bound together. The Bible contains Genesis i-viii, St. Matthew, St. John, the Acts, Romans and I Corinthians. The service book contains morning and evening services shortened and adapted, sacrament of the Lord's Supper, infant and adult baptism, marriage, churching, and burial services, four catechisms and twenty-seven hymns. The works were seen through the press by Rev. William Yate, who was in Sydney for this purpose from November 1832 to August 1833. Earlier, smaller fragments of the New Testament, had been printed by the missionaries at Sydney in 1827 and 1830, in very small editions. RARE: the last copy of either book traced on the market was the Harmsworth copy of the service book, sold in 1950.
