BOOK OF HOURS, Latin and French, use of Orléans. [France (Paris), last quarter of the fifteenth century]. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, i + 122 + i leaves, [1-26 32 (binder's vellum, blank) 4-98 108 (-7, 8 blank) 11-168 178 (-7, 8 blank)], 205 x 130 mm. (8 x 5 3/4 in.), written in dark brown ink in a Gothic textura script, ruled in red ink, single columns of 19 lines, justification (130 x 72 mm.), 12 FULL-PAGE MINIATURES, in arched borders, some with architectural embellishments, 5 SMALL MINIATURES, the large miniatures with full illuminated borders of flower sprays, foliate arabesques, birds and grotesques on matte gold, natural or geometrically paneled grounds, similar borders in the three outer margins of the leaves with small miniatures and at Lauds of the Virgin (fol. 34), thirteen 3-line initials in blue with white tracery on gold fields, enclosing painted flowers on matte gold fields, numerous 1- or 2- line initials in burnished gold on red or blue fields with white tracery, line fillers in red and blue with white tracery and gold accents, rubricated. Occasional flaking of pigments and ink, stains on fols. 69v-70, 81v-82, 105v-110, occasional slight stains elsewhere, small original holes in several margins, two defective corners (fols. 107, 108), patch on fol. 68v with parts of four letters restored on recto. Binding Eighteenth-century green morocco over pasteboard, outer and inner frame of triple gold fillets, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, the second compartment with brown morocco lettering piece, title HEURES MANUSCR in gilt, edges gilt, two silver clasps, worn and scuffed , in modern buckram clamshell box. Texts Calendar, in French, including Paris saints Genevieve (Jan. 3), Denis (oct. 9), and Marcel (Nov. 3), all in red (fols. 1-12v; fols. 13-14 blank). Gospel sequences (fols. 15-19v).
