BOOK OF HOURS, Latin , use of Rome. [Low Countries or Rhineland, 15th century]. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, iii (modern vellum) + i (former pastedown, medieval vellum) + i (medieval vellum flyleaf) + 100 + i (former pastedown, medieval vellum) + iii (modern vellum) leaves, (traces of several conflicting sequences of modern pencilled foliation), [1]8 [2]6 a-b6 c6 (c3+1 blank leaf, modern vellum) d6 e8 g-i6 k6 (k2 + 1 blank leaf, modern vellum) l-o6 p4, traces of original quiring and original catchwords visible in lower margins, 155 x 105mm. (6 1/8 x 4 1/8in.), written in brown ink in a textura script, the calendar in red and brown, ruled in red ink, single columns of 17 lines, justification (83 x 60mm.), 5 HALF-PAGE MINIATURES in arched frames over five lines of text, each accompanied by a two-sided border with acanthus sprays, gold besants and ivy leaves, and naturalistic flowers and birds, and by a five-line colored initial with white tracery and floral in-filling on a burnished gold ground, 1 similar initial with a three-sided border, 9 similar initials with partial borders top and bottom, many two-line initials in burnished gold on pink and blue grounds with white tracery, one-line initials in burnished gold with black and red or green flourishing or in blue with red flourishing, other initials touched in yellow, rubrics in red. The major borders somewhat rubbed, some flaking of pigment from large initials, some soiling and cockling of margins, old vellum patches in blank areas of f. 1v and f. 69v, nailholes from two clasps in each of the former pastedowns. Binding Blue morocco, by the Club Bindery 1902, in brown morocco slipcase. Texts Calendar (ff. 2r-13v; ff. 1 and 14 blank). Hours of the Cross (ff. 15r -17v). Hours of the Holy Spirit (ff. 18r-20v). Annunciation, in a similar building, with a phoenix and a man inhabiting the border (f. 31r). 4. The Last Judgement (f. 69r). 5. Burial of the Dead, in a church with an elaborate interior of round arches and a blue-and-white tile floor. Provenance Written in the Low Countries or Rhineland, to judge from the presence in the calendar of St. Nicasius of Rheims (red, Dec. 14), St. Willibrord (Nov. 7), and St. Gertrude of Nivelles (March 17; spelled Gheertrudis virginis ) and from the occasional orthographical intrusion of w Marci ewangeliste, Luce ewangeliste ).
