BOOK OF HOURS, Latin and French , use of Rouen. [France (Rouen), c. 1490]. ILLUMINATED MANSUCRIPT ON VELLUM, 126 leaves, [112 28 34 4-98 104 11-158 164 176], 168 x 115 mm. (6 5/8 x 4 1/2 in.), written in black or brown ink in lettre bâtarde , the calendar in blue, red and gold ink, ruled in red ink, single columns of 17 lines, justification (93 x 60 mm.); illustrated with 14 FULL-PAGE MINIATURES FROM THE WORKSHOP OF THE MASTER OF THE GENEVA LATINI, each with borders on three sides containing sprays of fruits and flowers interspersed with vining hairline stems bearing black dots and burnished gold leaves, and with foliate arabesques in blue, white, red and/or matte gold, some also incorporating birds or grotesques, four borders (fols. 25, 52, 77, 93) on full matte gold grounds, ten borders on geometrically panelled matte gold and natural grounds; all other pages with borders in the outer margins with similar motifs, often growing out of gold flower pots, on natural grounds; twelve 3- or 4- line iniitials in blue with white tracery and scrolled vine infilling with red and/or green leaves on burnished gold grounds, four 3- line initials in red with white modelling filled with floral sprays on matte gold grounds, numerous 2- line initials in deep red on blue or blue on red with matte gold modelling and tracery, 1- line initials and line fillers in matte gold on deep red or blue grounds, secondary initials touched with yellow, rubricated. Original mend (before illumination) in lower margin of fol. 61, extending into border, smudges to text and/or borders on fols. 53v-54, 65, 77, 121, a few slight smudges or stains elsewhere, generally in very fresh condition . Binding Modern dark red morocco by James Brockman, edges gilt, in matching quarter morocco clamshell box.
