[The Holy Bible, Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New], KING JAMES' GREAT "SHE" BIBLE, London: Robert Barker [1613] - 1611. Folio. 390 x 257 mm. 732 leaves, complete with the double-page engraved map by John Speed loosely inserted, the map in its second state with stipple-shaded seas and without engraver's name, but with general title and last leaf of revelations supplied in facsimile (the supplied facsimile title being of the 1611 "He" Bible edition). 14 other leaves supplied from a slightly shorter copy, and some rehinged (A2-B4, and 2R1-2S1). Black letter, double column, New Testament title (dated 1611) set within wide woodcut pictorial borders, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials, 10 leaf calendar and almanac printed in red and black, 36-page undated Genealogies, with woodcut illustrations, the final gathering 5A rehinged with some restoration at the outer corners, the folding map slightly worn and restored at upper margin and lower right corner with some loss. Some light toning and marginal staining throughout, upper margins cut slightly close to border line. Modern paneled calf, bound to style, red speckled edges. Provenance: Exhibited by Mr.J.Young, of Leicester (late nineteenth/early twentieth century printed exhibition label, with notes on the typographical errors in the bible, loosely inserted); Edward G Whitmont (20th century book-plate). THE KING JAMES' GREAT "SHE" BIBLE, THE SECOND FOLIO EDITION, with the reading "She went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15, and the error in Matthew 26:36 where "Judas" appears for "Jesus". In this copy "Judas" is scratched out with "Jesus" inked in, by an 18th century hand. The King James Great Bible is considered the most important English Bible to have been printed. The great English Biblical scholar Francis Fry described the "She" Bible as the "first edition, second issue, without reprints" of the Authorized version, printed to reconcile the versions of the Bible used by the Clergy on one hand, and the laity on the other. The translators, who numbered about fifty, were divided into committees based at Oxford, Cambridge, and London. They were instructed to take the Bishops' Bible as their basis, and consult Tyndale's, Coverdale's, Matthew's, Whitchurch's and the Geneva version. Fry. Description of the Great Bibles, London: 1865. "From about the middle of the seventeenth century until the appearance of the Revised Bible of 1881-5, the King James' version reigned without rival"(Herbert 319). [STC 2224; cf. PMM 114]
