BIBLE, in English. London: Robert Barker 1612. 4° in 8s (218 x 164mm). Titles within large woodcut borders, 18 (of 20) leaves of Genealogies bound before the first title. (Without the map, with duplicate leaves C3-8 but lacking B3-8: a binding error, some soiling and occasional marginal dampstaining, a few small repairs eg. at 3F6, 4D1, and 4K1, 4B5 torn with some loss, last leaf backed.) 17th-century calf panelled in blind (rebacked, endpapers renewed, corners worn). Provenance : Matthew Wilson (contemporary signature at 2V8 and light marginalia, perhaps in same hand) -- Thomas Jefferson Fitzpatrick (1868-1952; sold by:) -- Frank Glenn, Kansas City bookseller (catalogue note laid-in). The second edition, being THE FIRST QUARTO EDITION OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE, which follows closely the text of the first edition published in 1611, including mistakes at Ruth III-15 ('hee'), and others. This Authorised Version, the work of over 40 translators divided into five committees based at Oxford, Cambridge and London, undoubtedly has had a greater influence on written and spoken English than any other book. No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881. This copy from the collection of Thomas Jefferson Fitzpatrick, whose extreme bibliomania is recorded by Vosper. Fitzpatrick was said to be a descendant of Thomas Jefferson on the Randolph side, and to have in his collection books from Thomas Jefferson's library. At his death his library filled thirteen rooms and weighed approximately 90 tons. Herbert 313; Vosper, 'A Pair of Bibliomanes for Kansas: Ralph Ellis and Thomas Jefferson Fitzpatrick', Lawrence: 1964, pp. 11-19.
