Contemporary blind-tooled calf (worn, dampstained, somewhat defective). Provenance : Alkin family (front endpaper inscribed by various owners c.17-19th century) SECOND FOLIO EDITION OF THE KING JAMES'S BIBLE, also known as the 'Great She Bible' for the more correct reading 'She went into the citie' in Ruth iii 15; and with the misprint in Matt xxvi 36, reading 'Judas' (here corrected 'Jesus' in manuscript). This Authorised Version, the work of over 40 translators divided into five committees based at Oxford, Cambridge and London, undoubtedly has had a greater influence on written and spoken English than any other book. No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881. Herbert 319; STC 2224.
